Porsche does not just slap the RS badge on just any of their models. The car that carries the badge ultimately needs to be even more race-prepared than the usual Porsche models, for example, the 911 GT2 RS. So it is only fitting that the badge should find its way onto the 718 Cayman GT4.
As it turns out, taking the ultimate 718 Cayman and making it better shows great results. Jörg Bergmeister, brand ambassador and development driver, lapped the 20.832km Nürburgring-Nordschleife circuit with the 718 Cayman GT4 RS in 7:09.300 minutes. Bergmeister has put in over 500 hours to the test and tuning of the RS model.
To compare the performance, the RS car ran the same, shorter 20.6km version of the Nurburgring as did the 718 Cayman GT4. The sports car clocked the fastest lap time of 7:04.511 minutes, a clear 23.6 seconds faster than the non-RS car. The 718 Cayman GT4 RS were equipped with a racing seat and fitted with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R. The tyres will be available as a cost option.
In staying true to form, the RS sports car is made to be lightweight with more downforce and more power. The car’s response and feedback to driver inputs have also been turned up to 11. When it goes on sale, you can expect the Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS to be one of the best driver’s cars in the world.
The RS is based on the 718 Cayman GT4, which is powered by a 4.0-litre flat-six engine. The boxer produces 420PS and 420Nm. The engine is mated to either a six-speed manual or a PDK transmission. The sports car accelerates from 0-100kph in 4.4s (with manual) or 3.9s (with PDK). Fast, very fast. Any faster and you’ll have to go into 911 territory.
